To demonstrate an understanding of laser technology and the design opportunities it offers through the following: An introduction to laser technology, and information about companies involved with these processes. A series of workshops and inductions into processes and equipment. The design and production of a new product – created using one or more of the following; Laser sintering, laser welding, laser cutting, laser marking, laser scanning. The creation of appropriate marketing material to promote your product. Ensure you fully understand all that Laser technology can offer you as a designer. Use your time effectively to research the available technology and how to explore a design process that is appropriate for that technology. Attend all of the scheduled inductions / laser workshops. Complete the 5 tasks and document these processes digitally. Understand the cost implications of the technology and the company contacts to outsource the processes.
For this project ive decided to use Rhino software to create a pair of organic styles earrings.
During my first project i made a floral spinning ring, in which i tryed to en capture this rustic organic style. I nearly got there but i was a little off, so was hoping with this piece to hit the nail on the head.
I started off by looking at images im drawn to such as abstract pottery, Woodland flowers, lichen growing off old trees, mushroom and fungi, decaying organic objects that still hold beauty.
I started to play around with shapes, i wanted an uneven , un perfect sphere to enclose an uneven un perfect rough diamond.
I created a sphere on Rhino and hollowed it out, un wrapped the object and imported in to artcam to give it a wood / bark texture.
I then created a seed pod shape to which i stuck these spheres on to it, with other spherical blobs which i will flush set rose cut diamonds.
The bigger spherical cups i will use by enclosing a rough diamond with about a 4mm diameter using the laser welder and silver wire.
